Engineering Technicians are involved in the practice or application of technology designed by engineers, and, engineers in R&D, manufacturing, assembly, sales, inspection, maintenance, repairing and experimental tasks. They may work for specific industries such as jute, plastic and sugar etc. and undergo special training for these sectors.
They study for a diploma and to upgrade their qualifications. They may also undergo post diploma part time engineering courses. Engineering Technicians specialize in different areas and disciplines.
Aeronautical Engineering Technicians: Aeronautical Engineering Technicians hold diploma in aircraft maintenance engineering. Their job is carried out under supervision of engineers.
These professionals employed by various airlines, Government Production Units, airport authority and in research organizations. In this sector, Avionics specialists install, repair, test and maintain radar and radio equipments aboard and space aircrafts.
Automobile Technicians: Main task is focused in the manufacturing sector for assembly line jobs, repair and maintenance of vehicles. Their training involves understanding electrical and mechanical systems of all types of vehicles.
Chemical Engineering Technicians: These technicians assist chemical engineers and work in chemicals, detergents, fertilizers, paints, plastics, pharmaceuticals, synthetic fiber and petroleum production laboratories, processing plants as well as industries. Routine function of a Chemical Technician is involved in setting up testing apparatus, preparing chemical solutions for the processing work.
Civil Engineering Technicians: Task of Civil Engineering Technicians involves surveying, calculating, designing, preparing draft plans, supervision and to give complete assistance to civil engineers in a project.
Electrical & Electronics Engineering Technicians: These technicians assist the electronic engineer in designing developing, testing and production of electronics equipments such as radar, navigational equipments and computer as well as ancillaries. They also can specialize in instrumentation and nuclear reactor electronics.
House hold Appliances Technicians: House hold appliances such as washing machine, sewing machine, kitchen appliances, fans, coolers, refrigerator and air conditioners needs maintenance. So, House Hold Appliances Technicians have many opportunities in working for installation, maintenance or repair of these gadgets.
Industrial Engineering Technicians: These technicians assist in the supervision of production units of manufacturing plants in order to ensure the capacity utilization of plant's resources.
Marine Services Technicians: These technicians provide maintenance and repairing services for marine vessels.
Mechanical Engineering Technicians: These technicians are employed in machinery industries. They assist mechanical engineers in designing, building, operation and maintenance of machines and its parts.
Plastic Technicians: Plastic Technicians give assistance to plastic engineers in R&D, mould, tool making, manufacturing and servicing.
Telecommunication Engineering Technicians: These professional helps in the designing, installation, operation and maintenance of telecommunication equipments such as radar, telephone and telegraph systems. They test, repair and give solutions for technical problems of communication devices.
Technicians are trained through diploma programmes offered in Industrial Training Institutes (IIT 's), Vocational Training Institutes or other professional institutes.
Duration of programmes is between 1 to 3 years and minimum qualification varies between class VIII to class Xth. Science and Mathematics should have been studied up to class Xth for most trades.
Studentship Examination: Candidate who have passed Intermediate or equivalent examination taking one or more but not all subjects as English, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. Aspirants will be required to pass the studentship examination in the remaining subjects in which they have not passed qualifying exam.
Professional Examinations for Technicians: Institute of Electronic & Telecommunication Engineers offers DIPIETE and AMIETE courses in electronics and Telecommunication field which are recognized by Government of India. For DIPIETE course, eligibility is 10+2 or 10th passed with General Sciences or Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics conducted by a recognized educational board.
