It was the biochemist who discovered the mechanism of fermentation process which has been practiced for almost 2,000 years. Biochemistry is concerned with the chemistry of biological process.

To investigate the effects of environment on living tissues is the job profile of a biochemist. Study of functions as well as structure of enzymes, proteins, fats, carbohydrates and DNA of livings are compiled under biochemistry subject. Process of metabolism and the molecular basis of the action of genes are also studied in this career stream.

Biochemist's main concern is to study the role of genetic transmission in determining the occurrence of diseases in a patient. These professionals identify chemical changes in cells, tissues and body organs which signal the advent of diseases such as cancer, diabetes or all type of mental disorders.

In agriculture, biochemists develop improved techniques for crop cultivation, pest control and management, crop storage and preservation.

A bachelor degree course can be pursued after passing 10+2 or equivalent with Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Agriculture for any recognized board or University.

To a biochemist, job opportunities are in medical research institutions like hospitals and pharmaceutical companies. Most of their work is done in laboratories. You can also join the R&D and scientific departments, public laboratories, universities and hospitals as well as the CSIR, ICMR and defense labs as a research assistant after a Masters degree.

Biochemists are also employed in the sales and marketing departments of pharmaceutical industries. Teaching in schools, colleges and
universities is an alternate option too.

In governmental institutions, a biochemist can get the salary of Rs.10,000/- to Rs.15,000/- per month. In other hand, at private institution, one can get a fat salary of Rs.40,000/- to Rs.50,000/- per month.
